For many of Germany’s two million Turks, reunification is not a pleasant memory.

In the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Turkish migrants were largely over looked by the government and targeted by radicals, as Germany struggled to reunite.

Video: Ostalgie: Longing for the GDR?

Twenty years after the fall of the wall, many former East Germans are longing for what once was but is no more. It’s a sentiment known as Ostalgie, or nostalgia for the East.

Immediately after unification, East Germans were quick to embrace Western culture; today East German products like Vita Cola and the Trabant car are making a resurgence thanks to Ostalgie.

But is it simply a case of East Germans celebrating some elements of their past? Or is a deeper lack of identification with Western values at the heart of this sentiment?

The Wall Ride Tour is a new, interactive sightseeing experience here in Berlin. The tour takes visitors along the wall and to the locations of unification. The best part of all is that you can drive yourself in a fifty year old Trabi [car] giving you a chance to experience what it would be like to be behind the wheel of one of these in East Germany back in the day, while being guided through history. The Berlin Project was given an exclusive tour before the public launch.
